What's in Your Tie Color?
Many visitors to the site often ask if it is appropriate to wear a certain color tie to certain occasions, and if certain colors have specific meanings. I've always been interested in a good looking tie, but haven't put much thought behind what people may be thinking when they see a specific color....I did some research and found some interesting psychology behind the colors of ties.
Blue
Blue is one of the most common 'favorite colors' and surrounds us (from the blue sky to the blue oceans). Because blue is seen as more trustworthy, dependable, and committed, a blue tie helps give the wearer a sense of authority and believable. Blue is typically calming and may be the right tie to wear to that board meeting where you share declining sales to the board....
Brown
Brown is the color of the earth, and is another approachable color that people are accustomed to. Brown brings feelings of stability, reliabilty, and approachability. A good looking man who wears a brown tie may find people around him coming to him for relationship advice though, so wear it with caution.
Black
AC/DC said it best---"I'm back in black." I'm not sure that applies here at all, but its a great song. Black is a classic color that connotes power and authority. A black tie often makes the wearer seem more powerful and authoritative. Some say that black has a thinning effect, so instead of going jogging tomorrow morning, try throwing on a black tie.
Grey
While often the most mispelled of all colors, grey is another classic tie color. Although grey often has some dark connotations, it is a classic suit color as it matches almost anything. A high-quality grey tie is timeless and practical.
